Asthma

Asthma Management

Currently, Steps to a Healthier Rochester is working in collaboration with schools and medical providers to establish policies for every child with asthma to have an Asthma Action Plan at school.  Asthma Action Plans help to identify a student's individual asthma triggers and treatments.  Following an Asthma Action Plan is an important step to managing asthma as a chronic condition and preventing asthma episodes that require emergency care.

In partnership with the Southeast Minnesota Asthma Coalition, Steps to a Healthier Rochester assists with public service announcements for youth, emphasizing the importance of exercise despite having asthma.  To view the PSA, visit Olmsted County’s Web site.

Nutrition
Grow your own vegetable eaters!

Gardening can work up an appetite – for vegetables! Did you know that kids who experience gardening are more likely to try new foods and have better attitudes about eating vegetables? Here are some ways kids can experience gardening and garden produce:
o    Grow a backyard garden
o    Grow a container garden on the deck: a tomato plant, a few pepper plants, onions and herbs will give you a great start on some homemade salsa!
o    Attend a camp that includes gardening activities (at the Y or Girl Scouts)
o    Put in a school garden
o    Check into community garden plots
o    Visit the farmers market

For some great kid-friendly recipes, download the Delicious & Nutritious Garden Cookbook.
