Saint Paul Public Schools Staff  Get on the Ball

More than 50 classroom teachers, physical education teachers, therapists and support staff attended stability ball training on November 1. The training was hosted by Student Health and Wellness and funded by Steps to a Healthier St. Paul. Lisa Witt of WittFitt facilitated the training session. WittFitt promotes the use of the stability ball as a sitting device to enhance the learning environment and provide ergonomic seating.

The many benefits of sitting on stability balls include: promoting learning through movement; active sitting with no classroom disturbance; enhances attention and concentration; assists in improving posture; improves blood flow to all parts of the body, especially the brain; strengthens core (postural) and back muscle groups; improves balance and coordination.

Those who attended the training hope to integrate the stability balls into their classrooms, therapy sessions and office spaces.  (Click here to see pictures from the training.)

Check this Web site for registration information for another WittFitt Stability Ball training in December. This training will be a repeat of the November training. There will be a fee involved.

Worksite Health and Fitness

Does your non-profit organization need improved employee health and fitness? St. Paul Steps staff will be working with non-profit organizations in Saint Paul in 2007-2008 to evaluate needs and opportunities for improved worksite wellness policies and programs. Steps staff can assist with worksite evaluations, provide technical assistance on choosing and implementing new programs, and offer links to many resources on keeping employees healthy and preventing costly chronic diseases.

For more information on worksite wellness, send an email to http://Steps@co.ramsey.mn.us and an employee of St. Paul Steps will contact you.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Community capacity and activities, risk behaviors, the disease burdens of asthma, diabetes, and obesity, and provider care practices are the key measures to be monitored among youth, adults, and high risk populations in each Steps site.

The major data sources are:

  • Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS)
  • Youth Risk factor and Behavioral Survey (YRBS)

BRFSS is being conducted annually and the YRBS every two years of the Steps grant. BRFSS data is collected on at least 1,500 adults per year in each intervention area. Due to the large proportion of Hispanic adults that do not speak English ‘very well’ in our communities, the BRFSS will be offered in English or Spanish.

The YRBS is a high school survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by individual states. The Steps program requires that YRBS data be collected on 1,500-2,000 students in each intervention area every two years.
